Technology Devices that Can Boost Your Homes Resale Value

Technology devices can increase your home’s value and make life more enjoyable. Some may even reduce your homeowner’s insurance rates. Check with your insurance company but many offer discounts if you use smart locks, home security systems, smart doorbells and smart smoke & carbon monoxide detectors.

Smart Locks

Smart locks are a convenient and safe way to secure a home’s entry doors.

They use Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi to connect to your home network and are controlled by an app on your smartphone.

You will no longer need a key to enter your home. Depending on the type of smart lock you install you can unlock your door by waving your phone over the lock, entering a passcode, using your fingerprint, using the app, using your voice and more.

You can program the locks to automatically lock the door when you leave. You can also give access to others who need to enter your home. For example, maybe you have a weekly cleaning person or someone who walks your dog, you can assign a virtual key to these people so that they can unlock the door. Each person can be assigned their own passcode to enter and you can specify a time range for when each person has access. A log can also be created that records the activity such as who entered the house and what time they came and left.

You can also receive notifications when your door is locked or unlocked.

You can let someone in just once using the app on your phone. For example, maybe you are expecting a delivery and you are away from home and would like the delivery person to put the package inside. You can unlock the door for them using the app and lock it when they are done.

Some locks can be connected to the other smart devices in your home like Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant, among others.

They are battery operated so even if your home loses power the locks will still work.

Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat connects to your home Wi-Fi. You use an app on your phone to control the thermostat.

You can adjust the temperature and setup a schedule for the heating and cooling system.

A smart thermostat can save money by more accurately regulating the temperature inside your home. When you set it up you will program your ideal temperature and select the settings you would like to use. Overtime the smart thermostat will learn your behaviors like when you are home and away and what temperatures you prefer throughout the day. Once it learns your schedule and preferences it can automatically make those adjustments.

They record your energy usage, and some even calculate energy costs.

When you are away from home most will use eco settings, saving on energy costs. They do this by detecting movement in your home or by noticing when your smartphone is out of range.

Smart Doorbells

Smart doorbells connect to your homes Wi-Fi. They are controlled by an app on your smartphone, tablet or computer. They are similar to a security camera but different in that they allow the person at the door to communicate with you using a 2-way microphone.

They run on power, battery or solar power.

They act as safety devices because you can see who is at your door using the app. They can also record audio and video so if there is a break in attempt or some other kind of suspicious activity you will have a record of the event to share with the police. They can also act as a deterrent. When someone knows their activities are being filmed and recorded, they are less likely to do something malicious.

Most also use motion detection so you can be alerted when any activity takes place within the cameras range.

They are also convenient if you are expecting a delivery, but you are away from home. You can communicate with the delivery person and instruct them where to leave your package.

Smart Appliances

Smart appliances like ovens, refrigerators and dishwashers connect to your home Wi-Fi and can be controlled by an app on your smartphone.

You can control things like refrigerator temperature and humidity, turn the oven on and off and control the oven temperature, start the dishwasher and more.

Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide (CO)Detectors

Traditional detectors alert you to a problem when you are home by sounding an alarm, but smart devices are controlled by an app on your smartphone so you will receive alerts even when you are away. They can also be programmed to alert the fire department automatically.

Smart Home Security System

Whether it is a security system you install yourself or one you have installed by a professional they can add value to your home. There are many different options and features when it comes to a security system. They secure entry points into your home such as doors and windows. They can secure and monitor interior areas as well such as rooms containing valuable items.

They can include wired and wireless security cameras, alarms and motion detectors.

You control the system using a smartphone app and a touch panel. They can alert the police department when an event occurs.

Smart Lighting

Smart lighting connects to your home’s internet and you control the devices using an app on your smartphone. You can adjust lighting while you are home and away, setup lighting schedules, control lighting effects such as dimming and color ambiance, automatically turn lights on and off when you enter and leave a room and turn lights off after a period of inactivity.
