Can Baby Monitors be Hacked?

Anything connected to the internet is hackable, baby monitors are no exception. Baby monitors and other IoT (internet of things) devices are convenient, but they do come with security risks.

Hackers can gain access to a system via your network – which would compromise all your devices, or through the device itself.

Much of the vulnerability of a baby monitor depends on how secure the software is on the device; this is controlled by the manufacturer.

When you install a new baby monitor follow the manufacturer’s instructions to configure and secure the device.

Buy from a Reputable Company

Do some research and read some reviews, when choosing a monitor make sure you select a brand that does not have a history of being hacked. The manufacturer should offer up to date security features like two-factor authentication, crypto-chip security, strong encryption and frequent firmware and software updates.

Register the Monitor with the Manufacturer

Register the product so that you are notified of recalls, security vulnerabilities, firmware updates and security patches.

Apply Software and Firmware Updates

Apply all updates as they become available, most apps offer automatic updates or update reminders.

Use Secure Passwords

Change the default username and password right away. Use a different password for each device, the password should be as long as possible if the device allows for 15 characters use 15. The password should include a combination of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and special characters. Change the password often and use a password manager to securely store your information.

Do Not Use Outdated Devices

While it may be cost effective to use an existing baby monitor if it is more than a few years old, replace it. Older devices may not offer advanced security features and software updates.

Disable Remote Access

If you don’t need to stream video while you are away from home, disable the remote access feature. Doing so significantly increases the baby monitors’ security.

Create a Separate Wi-Fi Network for Smart Devices

Break down your Wi-Fi network — create a separate Wi-Fi and password for the baby monitor and other smart home devices. You can do this by setting up a guest network on your existing router or by using a separate router.

Secure your Router

Enable all security features on your router, change the default username and password, disable remote access, use MAC filtering, disable port forwarding, keep the router updated with firmware patches, use a guest network for visitors, limit connections, change the SSID, and disable SSID broadcasting.

Signs your Baby Monitor has Been Hacked

Unusual Activity

If you notice the camera moving around, turning on at odd times or the LED lights blinking that could indicate that the monitor has been hacked.

Unusual Noises

Baby monitors use two-way communication. Listen for any strange noises or voices.

Setting Changes

Regularly log in and check the settings on the baby monitor, if you notice anything has been changed that’s a red flag.

What to do if you Suspect Hacking

If you have any reason to suspect the baby monitor has been hacked unplug it, then perform a factory reset on the device.
